Abstract

International relations study has been developed as a science (state of theart) of intense debate. A decade ago it was still possible to divide the fieldbetween three main perspectives –Realism, Liberalism and Marxism. Notonly have these approaches evolved in new directions, they have been joinedby a number of new ‘ism’ vying for attention, including feminism andconstructivism. This writings is an introduction to the diverse worldviewsthat underpin contemporary International Relations (IR) theory. There aretwo reasons explored in this writing, First, the reasons for such diversityand the second responses to it. The first response, conquest, opposesdiversity and seeks to privilege one particular worldview. The secondresponse, coexistence, is one that finds no good reason to privilege aparticular worldview, and attributes a positive value to diversity andpluralism.
